Mixing DDS-3 and DDS-4

Can you use a DDS-4 tape on a DDS-3 drive? I think the tapes are just longer in length to get the added storage capacity but not sure if the drive can handle that.

Chances are that a DDS3 drive won't recognize a DDS4 tape, there is all sorts of information at the beginning of tape to help the hardware identify what type of tape it is.
