mixed mode IMS on 5.5 -> full exch 2k

Hello,
I have moved all of my mailboxes off my original exch 5.5 server and onto my new exch 2k server. My 5.5 server contains my internet mail service. According to documentation - exch 2k should be able to send mail on its own, however when IMS is stopped on the 5.5 box all outbound mail flow stops.
Do I need to create an smtp connector ? DNS mx records all ready point to the new server. Is there a problem if there is both and IMS on 5.5 and an stmp connector on 2k?

No one has any input on this at all?
Sorry if this has an obvious answer, but I havent been able to find anything online re: this issue.
