Hi I have a customer with an sx2k with q23.2.4, i need to change the hard drive but cust has lost the s/w disk,i am not sure on the parameters for formatting the drive i have managed to get a q26 disk but the disk formats but when trying to copy from actives drive to inactive i get the following message... FS error: Could not restore volume from OTHER plane with name: SYSUSERReason: Volume not formatted for File System operation.can anyone help!!!!!!

By the way, be sure to put an ACTIVITY FREEZE on the switch, then partition the system before attempting a hard drive copy.

Partition the ACTIVE plane first, then do the inactive. If you can't partition the Inactive plane then issue the command BUSY MATE on the inactive side and try to PARTITION again. If still no go then give the command FILE DISABLE RED to the inactive side and answer "yes" to the question that follows.

Remember to also set the active plane HD to read only (VOL SET SYSUSER R O) before issuing the VOL RESTORE SYSUSER FROM OTHER on the inactive plane.

Once you've done an HD copy then push the button to load the inactive plane from the newly copied drive.

While that's loading go back to the active plane and give the command VOL SET SYSUSER R W

Now go back to the inactive.. Once it comes up with a "desktop" screen go ahead and log in (default PW likely at this point) and issue the command JOIN. Wait for it to occur (it will ask for confirmation that both planes are at the same release.... they are because you just copied the drive so say yes and wait for the SYSTEM JOIN COMPLETED response.

Finally go back to the ACTIVE plane and issue the JOIN command here as well. Once again wait for it to happen.

Next the inactive plane will spontaneously reload. This is normal.

Remember to remove the Activity Freeze.

A second "By the Way".

If you've just lost a drive on one plane of this system I would strongly urge the customer to replace both drives, not just the failed one. Disk drive failures on tired old systems have a nasty habit of failing in pairs, often just weeks or months apart.

Hi i have been told the s/w disk i am using is not the correct s/w which is why i am getting the error when copying, what i have been told is that i need a s/w disk of Q23.4.2 or lower as this release did not have extended file system, where above Q23.4.2 has EFS is this correct!!!!

If you have a good running load on the other plane and you know what version that plane is running, then you only need to have the correct "format" command line parameters in order to be able to perform a successful copy.

The FORMAT command string I gave you was good all the way up to Q23.5 I believe.

Log on to the Active running plane and type the command "WHERE" - this will give you the load version that's on the good drive.

As for the S/W disk that you have, I think all you need to be able to do is to get that to boot up from the RSD. From there you should be able to manually enter the FORMAT command syntax.
