Mitel IP phone firmware question

I'm running a MCD 5.0 sw load is 11.x

I need your expertise in clearing up some questions regarding updating the IP phones firmware.

To upgrade the phone firmware, do I have to upgrade the MCD sw load? If not, then where is the firmware kept on the controller and how do I get the new firmware on the controller. I found the firmware for SIP phone, but not for regular IP phones.

I've read through the Tech Handbook and there seems to be a great chunk missing, like how to get the firmware and installing it. I've asked other techs and received just as many different answers.

So far, what I've gotten is, for regular IP phones, you have to install the lastest sw on the controller, then the phones will grab the new fw from the controller. For SIP phones, the newer fw can be downloaded directly from the SIP phone Web Config Util or manually through TFTP.

For Minet phone, they will download the firmware when they boot up.. The firmware is on the controller.

You don't normally get the firmware separately and if you start updating firmware without upgrading the MCD software as well you will probably introduce problems. You typically only upgrade firmware separately when instructed by Mitel product support and in those cases they would likely supply it to you because it would contain a patch. Otherwise the firmware compatible with each load is part of the MCD software so leave it alone unless you are trying to clear up an issue.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.
