I am noding a Mitel 5000 (on the public internet) with a CS5200 that resides behind NAT at the other end. I cannot get this to work and I've been told that IP Networking will not work when one or more sites has the controller residing behind NAT. Is that the case? If so, would the next best option be to set up a VPN between the two sites?

I recommend that you avoid networking via Public IP at all costs. With no QoS or network control you will have nothing but problems. Public NAT should only be used for off-site IP endpoints and Admin connectivity. Use internal IP's for networking via IPsec VPN or carrier MPLS.

Mitel has a recommended VPN router, but any decent quality VPN router should work. MPLS is a workable solution also, as 619Tech mentioned, with QoS end to end, but hardware on both ends could be expensive.

Is there a specific Mitel Document that lists these recommendations? I'd like to be able to present that to the customer.

Yeah...maybe, I'll have to look on Mitel Online knowledge base...
