missing USB driver after Slipstream XP3

I created a slipstreamed CD starting with XP Home SP1, and added SP2 and SP3 and then burned the CD with imgburn. When I boot the created CD, during the initial loading of XP from the CD, I get an error indicating USBENHCI.SYS is needed and the boot aborts. The usbenhci.sy_ file is in the I386 folder on the CD - what do I need to do to get it working? I need to repair this system's XP system and it has SATA and USB 2.0 devices where I need the later SP on a bootable CD. I only have the restore DVD and that will wipe out all the user files which I need to keep if possible. Thanks for pointers.

Not sure what you mean by having the restore DVD but if it's the original OEM version that came with your PC, you should be able to do a repair install of your OS without losing any files or apps. You'll have to reinstall the Service Packs & all updates but you shouldn't lose any user files. If you have access to the HD, copy all critical files to play it safe.

As soon as the Restore DVD boots up, it states all data and files that exist on the HD will be erased if I proceed with the restore. There is no option to do a Repair with that DVD. I understand I can copy off the data files using another system, but was hoping there was a better way. Thanks

I am not sure (that's if I interpreting your method correctly) that the above procedure is a correct procedure to follow in the first place?

I am not sure that you can slipstream an already slipstreamed CD?

How exactly was the slipstreaming done? Did you use something like Nlite?

Is the correct spelling of the missing file USBENHCI.SYS or is it usbehci.sys?

Do you have external USB's connected that you can disconnect during Setup?

The problem lies in the underlying install CD, in your case a RECOVERY CD/DVD, which are not suitable for slipstreaming from my experience...

FYI: if you have a SP1 XP CD, you do not need to slipstream SP2 and then SP3, just jump straight to SP3...

No, I first manually slipstreamed SP2 to my XP Home CD using the proceedure from

by Paul Thurrott up to where he instructed us to burn the CD. I then used his proceedure at

to slipstream SP3 onto the prior result and burned the CD from that.

My mistake, you are correct - the file name is usbehci.sys.

No, the USB ports are integrated into the motherboard.

I was not using the RECOVERY DVD for the slipstream - I was just stating that I am not able to do a REPAIR with the RECOVERY DVD and am wanting a standard XP Home slipstreamed CD to allow a REPAIR to be done.

Okay, I was not aware of that and assumed I needed to do both since if I attempt to do a REPAIR with the SP1 XP CD and then install the SP3 after the system is running, it tells me that the SP3 CD cannot be applied to that system, that I first need to apply SP2.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I still do not understand why the original USB driver cannot be found to be loaded. I will be rebuilding the slipstream CD tonight and try again, bypassing the SP2 operation.

Your method, I still think, is flawed. I suggest using the correct DVD to return your system to the factory settings, after saving your data. Then do all the updates and installs up to SP3. When you have completed the tiresome task get some imaging software and make an image backup of your now repaired and working system, and use that image as a recovery option for any later problems.

As it is you may experience problems with drivers included on the DVD and applicable to that machine, but not included in any slipstreamed retail CD.

make your life easier, and use nLite[/quote], it will slipstream the SP and all hotfixes/updates (provided you downloaded them before hand somewhere on the HDD)... also you can integrate drivers for the PC in question and remove unwanted/unneeded stuff...

wasn't all that clear, XP Home SP1 also comes as a Recovery DVD/CD... That is why I assumed you used it...

There is also a minor issue (or major) on some mainboards, where the USB drivers in SP3, do not function correctly, and the fix is to use the ones in SP2...

so I would slipstream to SP2 and extract the USB drivers, then start afresh with SP3 and replace the USB drivers...

but as Linney mentioned, it would probably be best to go ahead and wipe the drive (after the backup) and start fresh...
