Missing Task ID's.

I have inherited a MS Project 2000 file which has a section of missing task ID's. Can anyone explain why they could be missing?

All the sub-tasks are fully expanded.

I can simply hide the column when printing but I'm curious as to why it's happening in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jon.

I've never seen that happen.

Open the project, and double-click on the column header (the ID column doesn't have a title in the header).

You should see a pop up named "Column Definition" and the first field in the pop up window will be "Field name:". The entry to the left of it is the actual name of the field. Does it actually show "ID" !?!?!

If you are referring to a different field, then double-click on the column header for that column and report back what you see.

Thanks for the response.

Yep, it's definetely displaying the ID codes in the first column, and there's still 12 task ID's missing further down the programme. Weird.

Could it be something to do with sub-projects inserted from another file? Is there any way to re-assign the task ID's?

Choosing to display the WBS code gives me another solution for printouts in addition to simply hiding the column. Would still love to find out what's going on though.

Cheers,

Jon.

I just tried a bunch of different scenarios and I couldn't duplicate your issue.

I'm using P2003 ... what release are you using?

Thanks.

Twice I've posted a message with my email address.

Twice I've received messages from a Tek-tips 'bot saying that this isn't allowed.

So ... really wish I could help.

Maybe this will work. PDQbach4101
is the name I use at Yahoo.

Sanitize your project file and send it to me there.

The problem has been resolved.

The View | Gantt display has one set of parameters. The View | Tracking Gantt display has a different set of parameters. Those parameters are independent of each other. Those parameters (that control which and how the bars displayed on the righthand portion) are controlled by selecting the View you want and then clicking on Format | Bar Styles ... set up.

Jonnow was using the Tracking Gantt display. The params that had been set up for the Tracking Gantt bars ignored several "rows" or "type of information that the bar represents". If he used View | Gantt he could see all tasks and all task bars because the params for the Gantt display processed and generated a display for all task bars. When he used View | Tracking Gantt he could only see the rows where Tracking Gantt bars were processed for display.

In other words:

1. View | Gantt and then Format | Task Bars ... set up a display for all kinds of tasks.

2. View | Tracking Gantt and then Format | Task Bars ... set up a display for a limited subset of tasks. This created a display where it seemed that some task IDs were missing. They weren't missing, they just weren't being displayed because there were no parameters describing how they should be displayed.

This leads to an exercise for the curious: customizing the display to show selected tasks. Click on View | More Views ... and copy one of the Views (say, for example, Gantt) to TestGantt. Apply that view. Then use Format | Bar Styles ... to select a display of only certain "types of information". Think of this as another way of implementing Filters but also giving you some control over the way the pictoral portion is prepared.
