Missing Sharepoint Search Results

I’ve been charged with evaluating a new installation of Sharepoint. One of the things that I need to do is make it index and search our current file shares. I’ve added a few test folders on the file share as content sources and we’ve set up a root admin account that can be used to crawl these. Indexing the file shares is not the problem. When I look at the gatherer logs, I see that all the files/folders that I directed Sharepoint to index have been added successfully.

However, when I perform a search that I know should return results from the indexed file share (even specific file/directory paths), the search returns no results. I have full access to one of the file shares that I’m indexing, so permissions shouldn’t be a problem.

Search worked a few days ago, then the problem I described began. I’ve added the “crawling account” as the primary administrator of the sharepoint portal, to make sure permissions are respected. I’ve been through a lot of documentation and have messed with this for about the past two days. This looks and feels like something easy to fix, but this is my first experience with Sharepoint and I don’t have a ton of knowledge on the system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Might also be worth checking the Services that run Sharepoint log on with a user that has access those shares. Maybe restart the sharepoint services and MSSearch service as well.

I am running into a similar problem. All searches were working OK up until beginning of January. At that time, searching the content of any sites added returned no results. The sites were created properly and I think they are being indexed (but not sure since it is not easy to determine). All other sites, content, shared drives, portal content is being indexed and is searchable. New content added to existing sites is indexed and searched successfully. There is very little info on the Web about this problem and we are thinking that it might be best to call Microsoft support.

Hello,

Have you tried to reset your content indexes? And do a full update of them again? Have you looked in the Eventlog so that you do not have a mismatch in your indexes or if they are corrupted? Usually if something is wrong with the indexes you will get information in the eventlog on your server(s).

When I had similar problems, I resetted my indexes and started over. Sometimes it does not work just to start a full update, you sometimes need to reset the indexes.

Cheers,
Thomas
