Win 8.1
Events log shows that restore points are being created regularly the most recent I have found on 06 Nov 2014 ('Scheduled' variety) however when I go to System Restore I am advised that No restore points have been created.

The Win 8.1 installation is in a dual boot configuration with Win 7, Win 8.1 boots by default (although I am given the choice) when the computer is started. Both OSs are configured for automatic update.
The Win 7 and Win 8.1 installations are on two physically separate hard disks and Protection is on for the appropriate hard disk for each.
Win 7 was installed first.
Win 8.0 was added second into the dual boot and subsequently upgraded to 8.1 via Windows update, it is pretty standard except for installation of Classic Shell's Start menu.
Restore points are being created normally in the Windows 7 installation and a total of 6 are available. Max usage 10GB, 9.25GB currently allocated for the appropriate drive.
Huh and now after rechecking the Windows 8.1 installation I see a Restore point has just been created of the 'Automatic' variety. Max usage 10GB, 65.75MB currently allocated.

Does this ring bells with anyone, thanks.

It is a problem because of Dual Booting. Try some of the suggestions here. See the KB article in the third link.

Windows 8 : Restore points are deleted when switching to another system (dual boot)

Windows 7 deletes Windows 8 restore Points

No restore points are available when you use Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008-based operating systems in a dual-boot configuration together with an earlier Windows operating system
