missing pattern swatches

I'm having a problem in CS2 that has carried over from CS1 that I can't solve - when I go to libraries and select one of the pattern palletes, it pulls up the window for it, but there's nothing in it. I can read the patterns fine (ie, if I open a template with a pattern in it), but I just can't get to them on my own. I don't have any problems with any of my other libraries, like brushes, symbols, etc, just this one.
I need my patterns back!
