missing named.conf and other files

I just installed bind.8.2.2_P5-25 on RH 7.0 2.2.16-22 using GnoRPM. After installation all of the program files (binaries) appeared to be installed OK. All of the configuration files are missing (named.conf, named.local, ...). I then used RH's up2date utility to upgrade bind to bind.8.2.3 and all 'appeared' to go well. But there are still no config files. Am I supposed to do something to create default files or are they all created from scratch.

search the whole system for the files you need using the locate command.. u might want to updatedb first... run locate namde.conf .. u should be able to find it after that..

Thanks for the reply. I have been using find / -name named.conf to search for the file (also named.*, named*, named*.*). I ran dbupdate as you suggested then looked for named.conf again (using locate named.conf). It only found the man files.
# locate named.conf
/usr/share/man/man5/named.conf.5.gz

I supposed I should have not used the fancy gui stuff to install and update this and done it manually.

ok.. i am not sure as to how RH does it.. but u might have some example files.. check /usr/share/packages/package-name/examples .. or sthing like that... u will most likely find your named.conf file as an example file.. u can safely move this file to /etc, rename it to named.conf and parse it to the bind daemon after configing..

You don't get a /etc/named.conf in the redhat package ('rpm -ql bind' will list the files installed in the bind pacakge). However, there is a /etc/rndc.conf which is also needed for secure operation.



Just create /etc/named.conf with your fave editor in the same way as you would for your zone files.



Otherwise run as root '/usr/sbin/bindconf-gui' and that will create it for you. I have found that using bindconf messes up the rndc stuff however so I don't use it myself....
