Missing Modem 1

Hello Guys. I am a vb programmer. I am not to up on hardware and operating systems. If a person were to re-install Windows XP then try and access the internet, but got a message that the system could not find a modem.

What would you do?

If it was a brand name PC, I would go the the vendor's web site (with another PC) looking for the stock XP modem driver for that model, or if that did not work...

If it is custom built, I would open up the box and read the modem card for hints what make and model it was, then go to that modem vendor's site (with another PC) to find an XP driver for it.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
