There are 5 PC's on the network connected via a 3com switch with broadband access. One of the PC's has lost its access to the net. I can see all the other machines in the workgroup but there is no icon in the system tray or any sign of the local area network on this PC. If I go to Device manager there are no devices showing, the window is empty. All other PC's are working normally. Any ideas?

Issue the command ipconfig /all on the troublesome PC, then post the results in this forum.

Can you find out if there is a speed/duplex mismatch between the network equipement and the PC?

Some network switches have an "Error-disabled" function, which means that if a port on the switch receives too much errors (from the PC), then the port will be shutdown by the switch itself. Resulting in a non functional network connection.

When you lose the network card you tend to lose everything associated with it.
You might try a power cycle reboot and see if it is picked up again. But some don't identify too well and you might have to manually install.

Looks like and issue with the LAN card. You may want to check it for hrdware faults. because LAN disappearing on machene happens if the NIC card is not working properly,
