When I open an eps file (made in another application) in Illustrator I get a message telling me that fonts were missing and had to be replaced. Obviously this is not correct cause I can easily change the font manually into the intended font once I'm past that message. So how do I solve this problem? It's so tedious to have to change all the text manually after opening it! Where are the font files stored anyway? Does it use the fonts that are in the Windows folder?

The short answer is, that fonts need to differ only very little to cause problems when a file is opened on a different machine. It will happen, for instance, that a file contains Arial MT, and your machine has Arial without the MT brand attached, voila you don't have the font! Illustrator is notorious for being very particular (or finnicky) about fonts.

Generally the most reliable problem-free way to move artwork with type from machine to machine is to outline the fonts... They stop being fonts so the text is no longer editable as text, so keep a BACKUP!

The fonts used are indeed located in the Win Fonts folder, if you're on a newer OS, unless you're using a separate font manager.

Outline the fonts you say? Sounds interesting...how would one go about doing this? I suppose this will have to be done it the program that created the file initially, or?

Type>Create Outlines, and yes, it would have to have been done on the originating machine, or at least on a machine that has the exact font on it.

Outlining a font causes the font metrics to be lost, and leaves you with vector drawings of letters, that look like text.

There are some who don't like outlining fonts because at very small sizes there are slight differences that occur when outlining (the "hinting" is lost), but it works and it should be a practice for anyone who sends artwork to others on a regular basis.

I encounter this problem all the time! I sometimes have to take PDFs created from Quark into Illustrator....
Go to type find font a list of fonts you are using is on top, in the center says "Replace With Font From"..there is a dropdown menu with document or system in it. Choose system and all the fonts you have on your system come up.
Click on the font to be replaced on top, click on the font to replace with on the bottom, then say replace all!
