When I run Norton I get a message that I am missing file apitrap.dll. It has a medium severity rating. Can anyone tell me what apitrap is and what it does? Also, is there a reference list anywhere for such things as files, icons, etc. so us newbies can learn faster? There is a lot of technical how-to available. But I don't see much about the "why" of things, as opposed to the "how". Thanks for your help.

Sleepless in Huntington Beach.
From the name of the file I would guess that apitrap.dll has something to do with stopping virii from attaching themselves to certain files, trapping them if you will. API are calls that programs make to the operating systems. For example, if you want to pring something to a printer, then the program must make a call to the operating system. Then the O/S checks to see if the printer is not being used. If it is not in use then it sends the "OK" to the program to print. If it is busy, then it informs the program that the printer is busy and to try again later.

>But I don't see much about the "why" of things, as opposed >to the "how". Thanks for your help.

As far as this statement goes, from the information that I have seen you are right. How I learned, was by experimenting, reading and asking around. If you want to understand how computers work, maybe you should enroll in a computer repair course. They do help fill in the gaps, although it is not for every one, it is a good learning experience. An introductory course usually delves into the electronic guts and gives you a feel for the electro-mechanical workings of the various parts of the computer. If you want to learn how the software works, not just use the software, why not take an intro programming course. Visual basic is good for beginners.

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I am interested in Mining Software, as well as Genetic Algorithms.

Fenris,

Would that have something to do with the fact I don't have a printer? Wouldn't the drive be there anyway? I am running Windows 98SE, Pentium III 600mhtz, Office '97 - if that helps.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob, that would have nothing to do with a printer they are entirely different animals. You must be running norton antivirus, probably version 5 or 2000.

When does this error message come up? when you do an active scan i.e. when you click on the icon and tell it which drives to scan or does it pop up on it's own.

If you want to get rid of this message, I would recommend reinstalling the software this should take care of the problem.
fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

Robwal, a good aproach to knowlege consists in getting yourself a good recent
A+ certification book and indeed, a repair/improve book
however ensure that the book is fully covering 98 some do barely brush wins 98
too bad, too big of books to carry to the beach!

byallmeans,
good suggestion I never thought of them as I gazed accross my desk to the stack of them that I have :) They are very good, but make sure they cover what you think is important. They should include installation, basic and advanced configuration, networking, troubleshooting. That list would be a basic list.

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com
