missing dialog "File is locked for editing"

With MSWORD I want the dialog box "File is locked for editing" to appear when another user has the document open. I find that it works for people with:
op system WINDOWS 2000 & OFFICE 2003 as well as OFFICE 2000.
I am a user with XPSP2, OFFICE 2003, and when I try to open a document that is already open by another user, I see a screen flash, no dialog box, and no MSWORD document. The documents are stored on a network drive.
Any thoughts?
