Missing Dial-up Adapter?

I'm running Windows ME and was experiencing problems connecting to the internet...

I could dial-up and every thing looked great and when you clicked on the to little computers in the system tray they would say they had exchanged 500 bytes or so of information, but when I tried to navigate anywhere in IE, or ping, or telnet to anything i couldn't. Sounding like a TCP/IP problem huh? Thats what i thought. So i decided to wipe all the contents of the network control panel including adapters, clients, protocols, and services until everything was gone. Then I restarted the computer and tried to add everything back but it said all I could add were clients, protocols, and services. Adding adapters was missing and has been ever since. Funny thing is, Windows will detect my 3com 10/100 PCMCIA Ethernet card and put in there, but i can't add anything else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just for the record this is a Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop we're talking about.

Thank's in advance,
Peter

Go to Add/Remove programs in control panel, select the Windows setup tab. Install DUN from there, it's in the "Communications" section.
It may be necessary to remove it, restart, then reinstall it.

Thank's for the reply, thats what i did just after i wrote the above message, except DUN was already installed so I uninstalled it and then restarted and installed it, and restarted again and wonder of wonders Microsoft Dial-up adapter is in the Net control panel again, but i still can't add any other adapters from the Net control panel and Microsoft Dial-up adapter is missing from the Windows Hardware list in "Add New Hardware". And to top it all off my internet connections are getting a fuzzy again.

Remove ALL components from Networking.
Restart, shutdown.
Restart, install DUN.
You should be prompted to set up MS Family logon as well.
If you're not on a network, this is normal.
You should DISable the NIC if you're not using it, both in BIOS and then remove it from device mangler as well, or you'll be prompted for a network logon as well as the client and protocall.
