missing/deleted data

I have 1 server with 42 sites - 1 virtual server, 1 content database.

I have a site that takes up 11 GB of the 42 GB we are using for sharepoint and this site had all of its lists and most of its document libraries magically "disappear" the other day.

My question for this group is: what are the scenarios that could have happened (eg: someone connected by mapping a network drive and hit delete, etc). People are starting to point fingers and I don't really have a way of tracking since deletions, updates via FrontPage, etc are not tracked in the event logs.

Do any of you have Alerts for Doc libraries configured as any Alerts sent out will tell you who deleted the data?
