After a new install of VB 6.0 and SP5, I created a new standard project. I wanted to add a control to my toolbox. When I clicked on the Project-->Components... menu, I got the error message: System Error nnnnnnn No such interface supported. The dialog came up, but the list boxes on all tabs were empty. I added the control from the Browse button and it appeared, but when I pressed OK, I got the same error.

The machine's hard drive had been reformated and NT 4.0 SP 6 freshly installed. It's not the VB CD, because it installs correctly on other machines. It's not my CD drive, because I got the same error installing from the network. I tried installing after running Norton SystemWorks and cleaning up whatever it found. All the OCX's are in WINNT\system32 where they belong. All the other installed applications - including some VB6 apps I wrote run correctly.

Any suggestions?

The problem was a comcat.dll conflict. A production COM+ VB application required a Windows 2000 version which was not compatible with the Visual Studio 6.0 version on an NT 4.0 machine.
In order to resolve the problem, the development machine was upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional under which VB 6.0 was perfectly happy to use the later version of comcat.dll
