I have a gateway pentiun III comp. It was not reading the OS so i decided to reinstall windows98. Somehow i changed the BIOS settings, because when i installed the recovery disk is not reading the c: drive among the possible causes according to the computer: the bIOS seting, or a bad cable.

how can i change the BIOS so it can read the c drive again or what do i need to do to find the c drive?

secon question where can i find the program JAS? this programas joins the files automatically?

thanks

Call Gateway technical support. They've told me they'll help do total System restores for 25 years after date of purchase. They will not support the software as to usage though. Tell them you just need help with a system restore. You must be armed the model and serial number available and the orginal purchasers name used at purchase and battle the phone prompts untill you get throu. Get the tech's ID number before you start.

You would need to restore the Default Settings when in the CMOS Setup, then exit the BIOS saving changes.

You can try sysing your HDD by restarting with a Win98 Styartup disk in the [A] drive and starting with CDROM support; At the [A] prompt type, sys c:, and strike the Enter key. Restart by holding down Ctrl + Alt + Delete.

i did what you said but stil does not recognize it . it says that the bios settings are incorrect. CMOS change?

You can't replace the Bios, it's a chip soldered on the mainboard. Just because you tried to upgrade to Win98 does not mean the Bios settings were changed. You have to do that manually, Windows can't change the Bios, or the Bios may just go bad. There are about 50 variables, the list too long for here. Please expand your explanation. Did you try to add a HDD?

Something has changed that was done manually. You must find what was changed.

i did not add anything it happens that i lost the OS on my gateway then i decided to use the recovery disk. somehow what i did changed the hardrive that is the computer does not see it. i go to DOS and type c:
it says that it does not see it.

is there a way to change the HDD cable to the A: so at least the C can be seen?

Are you sure your hard drive has not died? Can you access anything on it at all, that is any other partitions you may have apart from C:?
If not the hard drive then possibly the cable.
Nothing you have done should have altered any BIOS settings and anyway if you have set it back to default it should have overcome anything like that.

wait a minute! how do i set it back to default? when i boot the comp reads the a: and d: but not c: how can i force it to read c: i have not touched the inside of the computer

Screen show any flash message of how to enter setup? This is where you need to be. Sometimes the [DEL], sometimes the {F2], sometimes the [F10], sometimes the {ESC]. You should have some documentation with the computer that tells you how to get there. And the default settings should be a choice you can make. Also may have a choice of autodetect of hard drive.
And if the system can't see the drive from those changes you have lost it and will need to replace it and reload the new one. Ed Fair

when i start the PC it shows unable to find OS. Then , when i insert the restore disk it says restore from the c: or D:
then i choose d: then the computer says that it is unable to find the C: drive possible causes : bad BIOS settings. bad cables. I SWAPPED the ribbon cable on the board from the D: to the c: AND nothing happenned. TOOK THE conection out and reset it nothing any more ideas? why it says that the BIOS setting is bad. How can i FORCE IT to read the c drive? Is there life in another planet?

Do you have any manuals? Do you have any computer literate friends?
Entering CMOS setup is a basic requirement for using computers and you inability to get there indicates that you need a more basic help source than this forum. Ed Fair
