Hello,

When I try to export to PDF or print to a postscript file, the resulting files become corrupted. Some of the graphics are either misplaced or missing.

I have tried several postscript printer drivers, including Acrobat distiller 5 with corresponding PPD. All with errors.

I have tried every imaginable settings in both printer driver and distiller program, but to no avail.

Creating EPS file is OK though. but this creates seperate files. I can also print the erronoumos page separately as a PS file with success. The problem only arises when I try to print the complete document (66 pages)

I can also print to PCL printer with success.

Any suggestions ?

Hello John,

Thank you for good answer/link. I'll try some of these suggestions!

But I'm not fully satisfied. Some points:
1. Most of these documents printed when I used Windows 98. But then my computer crashed alot when USING pagemaker. So partially I had to upgrade, partially It was due to requirements from other applications such as IDEAS. Maybe the new postscipt support built into 2000 (or its GDI) is to blame...but If Microsoft won't fix it, Adobe should. I already have a quite large number of publications, that when I now updates them, won't be printed or converted to PDF. To suggest I should convert all graphics could be quite a task. Maybe I should send Adobe the bill...

2. Printing through PCL drivers work, but not PS drivers. So technically I could print to a PCL file, and by an expensive PCL2PDF converter package. But again, Adobe invented PS, so they should be able to make programs that could handle problematic situations

3. Since Adobe has built in support for PLACING many vector formats, including WMF and EMF, they are also responsible for making it work. After all what is good making a publication if you cannot print it?

4. Printing seperate pages or EPS pages works, so how difficult could it be to make PM print multiple pages ?

5. I work in a firm that creates technical documentations for machinery, and thus most of my illustrations comes from CAD packages, alas in vector format. Converting them to bitmaps or raster graphics (such as TIF)gives poor quality. I think I've already tried EPS too whitout being quite satisfied either...but I will try this again.

--As a conclusion I'm not quite satified by the suggestions/reasons Adobe gives, since they generally lets the users solve problems they themselves are responsible for.

After all, when you make a program, It should work with ALL its options. If they can not get an option to work, they should leave it out. Otherwise, create patches...

Hi, TorsteinT,

> 1 my computer crashed alot when USING pagemaker.

I have a Win98SE/PM setup and use PM daily. I can not remember the last time PM crashed - the time is measured in years.

PM is extremely demanding on both the OS and hardware, particularly the graphics card. A very common reason for PM falling over is that the current version of Windows is an upgrade rather a clean install. What I am saying is that it is system weaknesses rather than weaknesses in PM that cause the problems.

> 2 Adobe invented PS,

Yes, and the PS environment is very different from the PCL environment. PS is geared to the printers CMYK practice rather than RGB of the monitor, was created before MS's OLE came into being and a whole host of other things.

> 3 WMF and EMF

As in 2. These are very low level RGB formats and not used in high end printing.

See: "Limitations of Metafile Formats (EMF, WMF) When Printing PostScript from PageMaker"

I'm not sure what you mean.

> 5 Converting them to bitmaps or raster graphics (such as TIF)gives poor quality.

How are you converting them? EPS is the way to go.

PageMaker is getting old and is unlikely to be updated. You may find that InDesign is more suitable for your purposes.

Iechyd da! John
