I am currently going to college for my 4-year BS degree (I currently have a 2-year AAS degree). I currently work as a programmer and I am trying to decide which would be the better degree to go for. The MIS or CIS. At this college (MN State Univerisity, Mankato) the classes are very similar in both degrees. The CIS requires a minor (I plan on Accounting) and the MIS has several business classes built in (such as some accounting, management, etc.)

I guess my question is this. Where would each one take me? If I forsee myself as mostly a programmer or project coordinator would the CIS be the best way to go? Mike Wills

I would recommed the CIS degree. I have an MIS degree and believe me...the degree is 85% Business Oriented, and only 15% Tech/IT/Computer Oriented. Especially for a programmer, CIS would be most beneficial. It also depends on your school though...Basically, whichever major offers more Programming/Technical courses, Pick That One!

If you're not planning to ever go into management, CIS is the way to go. Problem is that the 'big' bucks are reserved for management. You can still do pretty well staying strictly technical, but the ceiling is lower.

(A fellow Minnesotan, nice 'warm' March we're having huh? ;-))

Oh ya, I broke out the shorts today... and it is only -10 F!!! ;-)

This MIS degree is in the Computer Science Department not the Business Department. And the core classes are VERY similar to the CIS degree. The only major difference is that the MIS includes a form of a business minor, and with CIS, I need to choose a minor.

I chatted with an instructor for a while yesterday and I think I have decided on the MIS track. It gives a more general business area and hopefully what I would need to know for running a business of my own some day. Mike Wills
