Mirror problems following reboot

We have been miroring for a long time but have only recently had a problem where a drive went down out of hours. Whe the system rebooted overnight the volume group was not varyed on.

When I issue the varyonvg command I get the following message:

PV Status: hdisk21 0041609bed69aabb PVACTIVE
hdisk17 0041609bed6d7b38 PVMISSING
0516-056 varyonvg: The volume group is not varied on because a physical volume is marked missing. Run diagnostics.

I can get over this by using "varyonvg -f" but would still mean that the vg was not available until this is done.

The quorum is definately set to "no"

I assume something must have be set up differently when creating the vg or mirror, but what?

The problem you had is when you rebooted , you lost a disk , but the VG still continued to work , you should have removed the disk from VG , replaced it and synced mirror , since you rebooted , it tried to varyon the volume group , even though quorum was off you can't vary on a volume group if a disk was lost/unavailable ( your reboot would have done this ) , the only way round it as you have found out is to force the varyon, OR by setting the variable
MISSINGPV_VARYON in /etc/environment ( must reboot to set this active) basically this parameter if you have quorum off
and your disks are lost will force the volume group to be varied on upon reboot .

I would reducevg until the disk is replaced so you can avoid this whole thing. You would have to remove the lv copy (rmlvcopy I think?) first then reducevg. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation
