I want to set a system so that any accounts created will default to a starting UID of 6500 (or the next available from that base number). The numbers below 6500 would be "reserved" for specific accounts that need to have the same UID across several systems.

In AIX I can control the UID via /etc/security/.ids (thanks p5wizard).

Is there a similar mechanism in Solaris?

I'm not aware of one, but I guess you could wrap useradd in a script which automatically checks for the next uid to be added using a reference file or even /etc/passwd itself.

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Another option might be to set up a dummy account with a uid of 6499, which I understand will force further additions to be 6500+.

I want to be good, is that not enough?

let me ask this - on a newly installed sun box, what is the first uid the system will use for an account (if not explicity specified)?

(my solaris knowledge is limited - been playing with other *nixes).

If I wasn't Blue, I would just be a Dragon...

Trick question. The first UID assigned on a newly installed *nix box is always 0 (root).

SamBones - true, but bluedragon2 understood what I was looking for.
