I want to set up a server (RH 7.3) with only the services that are really needed but there seem to be quite a few dependencies. Does anyone know of a comprehensive list along the lines of "if you want x you must also have y and z"?

I don't know of any dependencies in that department. Which exactly do you mean??

Are you talking about services or RPM packages? If your talking about RPM packages, it can't hurt to install too much (except for taking up disk space). If you installed Apache, but later decide that you don't need it, you can just remove it later (rpm -e packagename) or leave it and never start it. If your talking services, then you can edit the startup files and only start whats needed (ntsysv).

Give us some more info on what you plan to do with the system.

Sorry not to have been clear. I was talking about services needed for particular functions. The server has to provide the following:

nfs
samba
ftp
rsh
rcp

Then only install those services. Red Hat will automatically install any dependencies during the installation.
