hi
i have the install disks of mandrake 8.2
how do i do the install, so that the system is able to run, but has only minimal number of rpms installed
i don't want any servers or X, just a pure system that i can attach to my network and of course log in
thanx

Hi,

Mandrake tends to throw a lot of stuff in there that you might not need. It is, after all, designed to be easier to use and for the desktop more than anything else (although, from what I understand, is a very good server system as well).

At any rate, I've had to install Mandrake several times before I thought I "got it right" and, since I'm a newbie at Linux, am learning bit-by-bit.

Try doing an "expert" installation, and then manually select the packages that you need. Mandrake, like most distros, will auto-magic-cally build or remove dependencies as needed.

I figure as long as you have a network or other internet connection you can build on what you need from there.

And if you really want a bare bones system to play with, might I recommend something like Gentoo? Takes a long time to build, but the system is bootstrapped to your machine, makes you learn a lot and is quite fun! J.R. Juiliano

hi
i consider myself also a newbie so i was not sure which packages to remove that i do not end with an unstartable system
i have one system already installed, but trying to remove not needed rpms is really a pain - sometimes the dependencies are getting in a loop
i thought there's some possibility by adding some parameters at the start of the install, which will force the install script to skip the "select packages" part and install only the really necessary ones
but thanx anyway

if there's no obvious option then maybe it would be worth posting to a mandrake list to see if anyone already has a prepared "kickstart" disk they could send you.

i've not used mandrake much recently but i thought there was a special option for minimal install that would fit in 65mb or something.

thanx
according to your post i found it - the clue is to deselect all groups in the sw choosing screen - then i should get 3 minimal install options to choose from including the 65mb one
