minimized windows not on task bar and closed? 1

I have the problem described in thread615-418802 in the windows 98 forum. I read and tried to used advice in thread615-418802. winsrvreg was not there. "friendgreeting" was not there.
I have windows 98. I have just performed a bunch of updates from the windows website. the minimized windows still don't get iconned to the taskbar. I noticed that when the pc is booting up I can minimize something like solitaire and it does get moved to the task bar but when the boot is almost done, the icon disappears. my AV is pretty old. I don't know what to do next. thanks for any help.

... my AV is pretty old". So go update it and run a full scan. Do you have a firewall? If not, lack of one could have let all manner of nasties into your machine.

Address these basics first, then look for the more obscure...
