Does anyone know if KDE has an equivalent to the "show desktop" feature windows has (and mac os has also in the form of the hide)? I'm looking for a quick way to mimize all the open windows on a desktop.

In KDE 3.1 you can add this button by doing the following:

1.) right click on the menu bar
2.) Choose add
3.) then choose Special Button
4.) Then choose Desktop Access.

you should then have what looks like a "desk blotter with a lamp" on the menu bar. Whenever you want to get to your desktop quick (IE minimize all), just click this button.
