Boss is migrating from XP to Vista. He got a new PC with Vista on it and is determined no to go "backward" to XP.
What is the best migration tool to get apps and files moved?
Windows Easy Transfer? LapLink? Other suggestion?
Yes, Windows Easy Transfer works the best if you want to transfer files, e-mails, windows settings, etc.
But as far as any program, you cannot transfer them. They will have to be reinstalled on Vista
Tell your boss that Vista isn't that bad, at least not from what I've experience. I do however prefer XP, but I don't have it now on either my desktop or laptop since I upgraded my PC's.
Windows 7 is due out soon and he might as well go ahead and get used to the technology. Although XP is comfortable, it's like the others that precede it, it will be unsupported and obsolete before long.
If you have any programs like Adobe or Microsoft Office or others that required activation when you installed them on XP, make sure to deactivate them before you install them on the new PC. Otherwise they may not activate again, unless you still have unused licenses left on the serial numbers.
A single license of PCmover allows you to migrate from a single old (source) computer to a single new (destination) computer. Additional computer migrations require the purchase of additional licenses. As part of the checkout process, you will be given the option to purchase additional licenses at a discount".
Am I right that in assuming that once you have used that software it is tied to that old machine? It would be good if you didn't need additional licenses for each migration.
Went ahead and purchased this. FYI, if you purchase from stores here, you get the cable, software, $60 with $30 coupon. Buy on line, $30 no coupon. Purchased on line so I didn't have to deal with sending in. Will check to see if rebate still applies.
Going to use this software this weekend, will let you know how it goes. The fewer apps I have to re-install the better.
Okay, the laplink sosftware worked like a champ. For whatever reason, it did not move the Outlook .pst file, but no big deal, and had to do some file extension associations afterwords. It wanted to open all Word documents in MSWorks.
It took 9 hours for the program to run, but all in all, a good product.
