I am planning to transition from our Exchange 2007 server to Google Apps & Gmail. I have setup for dual delivery with google as the primary. I plan to move users incrementally until we work all the bugs out. Email is flowing now. However, my two users that are setup with gmail already do not get internal mail to their existing outlook accounts.

Google help said I need to tell my exchange server to do an mx lookup so internal mail will be routed through google. Where do I do this?

Google Help may not be right about that. MX records work on a per-domain basis, not a per-user basis. Do the Google accounts use a whole new domain, or are you using the same domain for both Exchange and Google? If they are different, the Google domain should be easily resolved by the internal clients and that mail should get routed out. Maybe you could clarify how that was set up.

Making some assumptions about your setup, it's possible that the main email address property on those two user accounts has been changed and is now the Google domain address, which would prevent internal mails from being delivered to those users.

In Outlook for those two users, do you have two mail accounts set up in the same profile?

Thank you. I've setup dual delivery. Every one has accounts in both exchange and google but I have not given anyone, other than the two of us, the ability to login to their google account yet.

The issue is that when a message is sent internally, from exchange, it never looks outside that server and so it isn't delivered to the google accounts.

Before I can answer this question accurately, I need to know: are you using the same SMTP domain for both Exchange and Google, or did you set up a separate one for each? Assuming that the same domain is being used for both:

Every AD account has an AD-stored email address for a user, and that's put in the Global Address List. In addition, every user who has emailed either of those two accounts has their address in their NK2 file, and internally, Exchange doesn't always use SMTP addresses, it uses X500 addresses.

To make a long story short, you are going to need to strip the Exchange attributes from each user that you move to Google Apps, so that Exchange won't try to deliver to that user's internal mailbox. You can strip the attribute by simply Disabling the user in the Exchange console.

You will also need to edit your Default Email Address Policy so that "yourdomain.com" is no longer Authoritative, but instead set it so that any addresses that aren't local are automatically forwarded out and resolved via the internet. This should automatically use an internet-based MX for your public domain unless you are using the same domain internally as you are externally, in which case you will want to set up the internal MX record like Google Help recommended.
