Hello: I put together this guide a while back.....maybe it will be helpful....
Migration to AIX 4.3.x - Gotchas, Quirks, Watchouts
I have compiled a list of "gothchas" from various sources from IBM for when
you decide to upgrade to AIX 4.3.3. It is not by any means a complete list,
but it does touch on some of the watch outs. Remember that you should
check the machines stability, hardware, software, back it up with a mksysb,
and especially back up all other information that is critical to your system. I
recommend doing a mksysb of rootvg, back up all your other volume groups,
and make sure critical data is on another tape as well. Make paper copies of
your setups and software in case you have to recreate from scratch. See
Save your System on our web page for some hints. Again, it is not all
inclusive, but it is a help.
Rule of thumb, get your system upgraded to the latest and greatest for your
level. This means, micro code for your machine, all software fixes at your
level. If you are a 3.2.5.0, you should go to 3.2.5.1.x if you can. Migration
installations have many problems if you are not at the latest. It can be done,
but you may have to troubleshoot problems after the fact. Micro code on
machines and on devices have caused problems after an upgrade, check to
make sure you are at the latest and greatest for your equipment. See getting
micro code on our web site also. If the microcode on a machine is too low for
AIX 4.3.3, you may get the Prep_Boot could not open deblocker..... and at the
top of screen !20ee000B.
Remember, check operating system level, micro code for machine, patch
level, amount of memory, amount of disk space free, supported or
unsupported devices.....and do a thorough check of your software with lppchk,
etc.....
Some devices do not seem to work on migration installations from lower
versions of AIX. For example, we have had many customers who were on
3.2.5 and had a single speed cd-rom on their machine. Although a single
speed cd-rom, (according to IBM is supported in 4.3.) We have not been able
to get it to work correctly all the time. One other thing to note is that most
older systems never had a cdrom...and it may not be on the bootlist. So
check the bootlist first for service mode to be sure it is included.... Some of
our customers had to upgrade to a quad speed to read the cd. You can
always test your cd-rom with the new software by booting from the CD before
actually doing the install. If it works, do not go further, get out of the install
(turn machine off if you need to.....also make sure you have a backup before
you play with a new OS). If it doesn't work, you know that you need to
upgrade the micro code, drivers in AIX, or need to get a better cd drive. Also
we had problems with density setting supported and tapes supported on 1/4
inch tapes. Some density settings on older (not supported length tapes) did
not work after the migration. Check to make sure you have IBM supported
tapes, length of tapes, and density before doing a mksysb that will be
required to restore system if you have to. If you have to retrieve one file off
these tapes, after you have upgraded, if it is the wrong size or density, you
will not be able to get it back!
Memory Requirements for Aix Version 4.3 has changed. It requires a
minimum of 32 MB of physical Memory, 64MB suggested. lsdev -Cc memory
for older microchannel machines or bootinfo -r to see what you have.
If you have under 64MBs pass on doing
the migration until you have the additional memory.
Initial Paging Space Requirements
Aix Version 4.3 requires the initial paging space (/dev/hd6) to be a minimum
of 64 MB in size
Make sure that you have enough hard disk space for this migration!. Disk
Space Requirements (recommendations): (this is free space, besides what
you already have installed as far as filesets)
/ 16 MB
/usr 256 MB
/var 16 MB
/tmp 16 MB
This is based on loading Network Support, X11,and CDE.
Filesets bos.sysmgt.sysbr (mksysb fileset) and bos.net.nfs.client are not
automatically installed in AIX 4.3. Java and Web based System managment
are automatically installed
Remember that the 4.3.2 OS is 648 mgs of stuff on the 1st CD, 276 mgs for
the 2nd cd, and 353 mgs for the third cd. It needs working room to install this
as well. Check to see how much free space you have and potentially how
much will be added to your system. The 4.3 Migration Guide is a great
redbook to help you plan. Its number is SG24-5116-00 and can be ordered
from the
Assume that tty definition and printers will not migrate correctly. Have this
information on paper so that you can recreate if you have to. If it makes it
great, if not you are prepared. Printer names changed, and do not migrate
well, ttys migrate usually, but the xon/xoff defaults to DTR and the alternate
pin defaults to no. Check the definitions if you migrate and the ttys do not
work. Also add clocal to runtime and stty (the end of the string) if you are still
having problems.
Additional things to note: If bos.rte.control fails, it is probably due to a missing
shutdown:!:21 in the /etc/group file. perf:!:20 was also added to the new
groups in version 4.x. Which might not of existed in 3.2.5
---------------------------
IF space is not there an allocated, I have seen many a migration fail.
If you migrate the hd5 area of your system is usually not adequate and will cause problems later. It has to be contiguous....to up it now if you can....
hd5 not large enough
The boot logical volume (hd5) must be at least 8 megabytes. The system you
are installing has a boot logical volume smaller than this, and the system does
not have enough free contiguous physical partitions on diskname to increase the
size of the boot logical volume. Please reboot in normal mode and correct this
problem, or restart the installation and choose an overwrite install. Use the lspv
-M diskname command to see the current allocation map of the disk.
OR
Error: No space available to create a larger boot logical volume. In order to
proceed with this installation the size of the boot logical volume (hd5) must be
increased to 8 MB. At this time there are not N contiguous physical partitions
available on the boot disk (diskname) for recreating the larger boot logical
volume. You must free up this space by removing or relocating one or more
logical volumes or file systems from diskname. Use lspv -M diskname to see its
current partition allocation map.
Explanation
Starting with AIX Version 4.3.3 the boot logical volume (blv), logical volume hd5,
must be greater than 4 megabytes. If your system had disks less than 4 gigabytes
in size in the root volume group, or was originally installed with a version of AIX
prior to Version 4.3.2, your boot logical volume may only be 4 megabytes. You may
experience this failure during preservation or migration installations. Overwrite
installations will create the boot logical volume with a size of at minimum 8
megabytes. Only the disk that currently contains the boot logical volume is
checked for additional partitions in order to increase the size of the boot logical
volume.
Sendmail Update: The version of Sendmail that is supplied with AIX Version
4.3 has been updated to UCB Version 8.8.8. There are several things that
need to be addressed in this new version.
Compatibility with AIX Version 3.2 and Aix Version 4.1
Sendmail Version 5.6.4 which was supported on AIX Version 3.2.5 and
Version 4.1.5 is not compatible with Sendmail Version 8.8.8 which is supplied
with AIX Version 4.3. Sendmail Version 8.8.8 will not work with the version
5.6.4 /etc/sendmail.cf configuration file, and there is no utility available to
migrate the old file. The Old /etc/sendmail.cf file is saved under
/usr/lpp/save.config directory and then overwritten during the migration. You
must then reconfigure /etc/sendmail.cf manually. AIX 4.3.2 needs to have a
fully qualified hostname. Usually hostname.com or hostname.(dot) in the /etc
hosts file. It looks for DNS, if you do not have DNS, you will need to create a
/etc/netsvc.conf file adding
hosts=local, bind to force usage of the /etc/hosts file.
Below is not supported by IBM:
If you have made complex changes to sendmail.cf and cannot immediately
duplicate those changes in the new file, you can do the following to revert to
your old Sendmail environment. PLEASE BE AWARE that Sendmail 5.6.4 is
not supported on AIX Version 4.3; so this should be considered a temporary
measure only.
1) log in as root
2) stop Sendmail with the following command
# stopsrc -s sendmail
3) Save the existing Sendmail files:
# cp -p /usr/sbin/sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail.888
# cp -p /etc/sednmail.cf /etc/sendmail.cf.888
4) Copy back your old Sendmail files:
# cp /usr/lpp/save.config/usr/sbin/sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail
# cp /usr/lpp/save.config/etc/sendmail.cf /etc/sendmail.cf
# cp /lpp/save.config/etc/sendmail.nl /etc/sendmail.nl
5) Restart Sendmail with the following command:
# startsrc -s sendmail -a "-bx -q30m"
Compatibility with 4.2 and AIX Version 4.3
Sendmail Version 8.7.0 which is supplied with AIX Version 4.2. and 4.3.0 is
partially compatible with Sendmail Version 8.8.8 in that the Version 8.7.0
Sendmail.cf can still be used with the new Sendmail binary. During the
migration or update, the old Sendmail.cf file will be retained. However, you
may wish to merge in the new options and rewrite rules that have been added
to Version 8.8.8
Migrating NFS and NIS from AIX Version 3.2 When migrating from AIX
Version 3.2 the files /etc/rc.nfs and /var/yp/Makefile are not migrated. The
migration process saves the old files in /lpp/save.config/etc/rc.nfs and
/lpp/save.config/var/yp/Makefile. You must reconfigure your NIS domain name
before an NIS client will work.
For NIS Servers, the NIS databases are unchanged, but you must reconfigure
the NIS domain and restore any changes you may have made to rc.nfs and
the Makefile because these files are replaced. User and group information is
retained because the passwd and group files are not changed in the migration
install.
TCP/Migration The default for the TCP/IP ipforwarding parameter changed to
NO in AIX Version 4. This means you will have to reset it with the no
command if your system was originally at AIX Version 3.2.5 and was acting
as a gateway.
If you do a migration install. you will need to save all your configuration files
manually, or be sure that you can quickly and reliably recover these files from
your system backup. Remember you may need to save X.25 configuration
files, etc. After the migration you can then check the configurations with the
default AIX Version 4.3 files. and customize where needed.
You may have to reconfigure devices or other items whose configuration
information is lost as well as loading any additional software and device
drivers.. Any device drivers loaded from a floppy or that were third party may
not exist on the new system. If it is a third party device, make sure it is
compatible with AIX 4.3.2 and you have the newest driver BEFORE you do the
migration.
AIX Version 4.3 now includes support for IP Version 6. Most AIX IP related
commands have been enhanced to support both version of IP. However some
older networking packages which are not IPv6-aware may have features that
cause them to exhibit problems. This can often be resolved by simply
changing the entry for that package in the /etc/inetd.conf file from tcp6 to tcp.
You should make a list of all the programs you have on your system to
assure that they will migrate or do if you need to purchase additional
upgrades.
Performance Toolbox upgrade required
Communication Server V4.2 upgrade required
ADSM upgrade required
3270 Host Connect new product
C for AIX upgrade required
X.25 Support Chargeable program
InfoExplorer License Extens withdrawn from marketing
Non-IBM Display Adapters
Customers using Non-IBM display adapters may also be using vendor
supplied software specific to those devices which . IBM is now using X11R6.1
compatibility. Remember that there are new X11 Libraries.
LOAD the compatibility filesets if you are having problems after the migration,
it may help you:

supported on AIX Version 4.3.
Network Terminal Accelerator is not supported in AIX Version 4.3.
Printer Names Changes:
You should be aware that some printer names are different in AIX Version 4.
This may cause problems with shell scripts that call the mkvirprt command.
Compatibility between AIX Version 3.2 and Version 4.3
Generally it is compatible, except if your application uses some of the
following:
unsupported, user-created loadable kernel extensions
X11R3 input device interfaces
CIO Lan device driver interface
SCSI device configuration methods (IHVs)
The nlist() interface
DCE threads
Remember that any program that must run in all environments such as
POWER, POWER2, and POWERPC must be compiled using the common
mode option of the compiler.
Things to watch for on client machines:
Network installation of AIX Version 4.3. clients
Service SNA or X.25
HCON
CGE extensions for PEX and PEX-PHIGS
Font Servers may be required on AIX Version 4.3. clients to handle X-windows
Migration Tests, Instructions, Post Migration
Make sure that you do as many of these pre and post tests as possible. Post
migration about inserting the second CD and typing update_all is important to
assure your system is migrated correctly. Please do the post migration and
pre migration tests. It is also wise to keep the old mksysb from the older
level, as well as make a new mksysb as soon as possible. Keep both with
dates and format on them.
One last note....don't leave your system at 4330....they are already up to maintenance level 7 on aix...
