At last we are going through this migration.

Is DTS a good way to migrate live databases from one machine to another or are bits and pieces missed. will I need to do any convertionfrom sql7 to sql2000.

Thanks

si

A better way to attack it would be to create a backup of the DB on the SS7 installation. Then create and empty DB w/ the same name on the new SS2K installation. From there, just restore the backup to the newly create DB and you have all of the DB in one fail-safe move.

Thanks

Another, quicker method, would be to detach the DB from the SS7 installation, copy the MDF and LDF of the DB to the new server installation and then reattach the DB.

Thanks

Thanks for that direction

Our server is running 72 separate DBs for customers. We do perform backups using maintenace plans on a nightly basis.

If I go down the route of detach and reattach, which is looking favourable now, can I do the same with the model, msdb and master dbs.....ie shutdown the server service and copy these system dbs to the new server before starting the new sql2000 server service.

Does sql2000 convert the databases as needed or will I need to perform any procedures?

Thanks si

The system DBs are a different issue. I would advise not moving them from a SS7 installation to a SS2K installation.

But all user, logins and rolls are contained in the system databases?????????????????

Thanks Si

Export that type of object from the SS7 Master DB to the SS2K Master DB. You can find a couple of those type operations are available in DTS as a task.

Thanks
