sorry for asking such a basic question that i know has been addressed here before, but since the search function here is borked, and my memory is fading on the subject... which of these two methods is LEAST destructive for upgrading an existing production host to AIX 5.3 (from 5.2)?

i've got stuff like home dirs in rootvg that i want to keep around through the upgrade.

tia!

If the OS level it's not the same (from 5.2 to 5.3) you have to make a migration. Preservation is only if you keep the same level (I think).

If oslevel is the same, only choice is preservation.

If oslevel differs, you get the choice preservation or migration, and "migration install" strangely enough preserves more than "preservation install".

Check microcode though, some server types will not install 5.3 on old microcode...
