Recently we did a migration from one domain to another, so we backed up all the sites using stsadmin. However, when we restored the sites on the new server, the code

SharePoint:portalConnection runat="server"

only works with sub sites. Any new sites created at the root level still points to the old domain. Is there anyways to fix it other than go through each of the sites and replace that line with an actual link? Doses anyone know where this data is being pulled from?

Thank you.

Hello,

I think that you still have references in a database to the old domain. Those things should be stored in the configuration database, so you still might have references there that points to the old domain. You can use SQL Enterprise manager to look at the tables in the configuration database, however I would be VERY careful in changing anything in the databases. Microsoft are often pointing out that if you change anything in the databases, you might have trouble getting support from them.

Did you migrate only WSS or the SharePoint Portal aswell?
Do you have several virtual websites for your WSS sites or is it one large sitecollection? Are you using the same configuration database for SPS and WSS?

Regards,
Thomas

Is it safe to go into the SQL Server to mess with the tables? From what I have read it isn't a very good idea and even at all possible.

We migrated from Sharepoint Portal to WSS.

We have one virtual website for WSS and I'm not sure if the configuration database for WSS is the same one. I did not do the migration so I'm not sure if we are still using the same configuration database. I'll have to find out from the person who did.

Hello,

No it is not safe to modify the Databases and that is not something you should do, but what I meant is that you can look at the tables and see what information it contains, just to see if it points to an old location.

You write that you migrate from SharePoint Portal Server to WSS, so you are no longer using SharePoint Portal Server at all? I would think that when the site were restored they had a connection to a Portal, and once they were placed in WSS environment that link still points to the portal server.
Have you checked under site settings, and the connection to a portal.

If you want to point the toplevel site to a new portal you should be able to change that under site settings, configure connection to portal.

Thomas

THANK YOU!! I didn't realize it was that simple!!
