Hello All,

I am in the middle of a Windows 2000 -> SBS 2003 migration and am in need of some guidance.

As a brief history, there are two existing Windows 2000 Servers (one DC / File Server) and an Exchange server. The dc/file server started having major I/O issues with saving data. We purchased a brand new server with the intent to migrate both servers to it, but we had to put it in quickly instead of planning the deployment because of the I/o problems.

Issue #1:
Right now, the new SBS 2003 box holds all the FSMO roles, although I have not demoted the old DC. I have been unable to transfer the DNS over. When transferring the FSMO roles, everything was successful with dcdiag and netdiag tests, although I received some cryptic messages about problems with the DNS. I ran through a number of Microsoft KB articles, but wasn't able to make any progress.

Issue #2:
I need to move the Exchange services from the old 2000 Exchange server to the new server. I have done this before with Exchange, but not with SBS servers. On the SBS 2003 server, I disabled all Exchange services to prevent conflict when I installed it. Some of the Exchange services can be turned on, but I can't get the System Attendant to turn on (Event ID 1038, 9149, 1005). For this, I found:

I have been considering opening a support ticket with Microsoft for issue #1.

My question is whether I should deal with Issue #1 (moving DNS) first and if anyone has any suggestions (i.e. something I might have missed that is SBS specific) and any ideas on the next steps for Issue #2.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

sjkted

If you look at the suggested SBS migration documents from Microsoft, they recomend creating an entirely new domain and exchange organization, setting up DNS forwarders between the two dmomains, then using the migration tools to transfer acounts and mailboxes from one to the other. I could be, and probably am wrong, but I do not beleive what you are trying to do is supported by Microsoft or even possible.
