Hi everyone. I am trying to migrate from Open Exchange to Exchange 5.5, and I have asked the administrator to enter the new server name into DNS. He has taken care of this, but when I try to run the internet mail wizard, I get the following error message: The Internet Mail Service requiers the DNS domain name to be configured on MAIL01. To configure the domain name, use the Network icon in the control panel on MAIL01 or select another server.

I am not really sure what is going on at this point. We use IMAP for email, and we need to get back the functionality of calendaring, etc.. I wanted to start moving the mailboxes of each of our users one by one over to the Exchange 5.5 server. But I cant get past this point. Anyone have an Idea of what the problem might be?

Put the server name in the DNS settings of the mailserver in TCP/IP networking, just like it suggests.

That does not work. DNS is entered in tcp/ip correctly.

Are you using a smarthost to forward all (outbound) mail from the IMS, or is the IMS server going to be doing the DNS lookup of the destination server?

We are using Postfix to forward, as I have been told by the outgoing people here.

I thought you'd gone away, this question took so long to answer.

Are you sure you've entered the email domain you are hosting in the TCP/IP DNS tab correctly? It needs to go in the 'domain' box, just to the right of the Hostname box.

Sorry, was away from work for a few days...

It is all entered correctly. This is the thing. I have the server set up in DNS, MX records and all as per our Lan Admin.

I can get on the domain as Samba supports NT Authentication. I can send emails out through Postfix and they do get to the test accounts on the internet. When I reply to the messages, I get an error saying that the account does not exist although i have created the mailbox and have associated a domain account with it. when I try and login to said account for the first time, I am repeatedly prompted for the pop3 password.

If I try and create a new NT acccount from within exchange to associate to a mailbox, I get errors stating that I dont have permission to do so, even though I am using the Administrators account!

All I want to be able to do is set this server up so it coexists nicely with a Samba Domain controller and sends/recieves emails. I am sure it work work seamlessly in AD, but this is what we use.

Thanks for all of your help!

In the Tcp/ip properties - DNS tab, under "Domain", enter your "company.com" and a Host Name. That should satisfy IMS setup.

Thank you very much for your help. We were able to get this server up and running on the domain. Now the task at hand is to migrate users' IMAP folders from Open Exchange to Exchange 5.5...
