Migration Failover Cluster Question

Cluster Gurus, our school domain is migrating over to the state department's. We have a 2012R2 failover cluster hosting many VMs. We thought we would leave the cluster servers (hosts) off the new domain but this is not possible. Joining the cluster servers presents other problems. My question is, is it possible to leave the cluster servers on the old domain connected to a DC? And join the VMs (guests) as member servers to the new domain? Am I off my rocker?
