We are migrating from Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows Small Business Server 2003.

We have setup new server, users in Active Directory. We have one NIC 10.0.0.1 for connecting to switch and LAN and second NIC 10.0.0.2 for connecting to our Router for Broadband.

I have connected to the OLD SERVER and copied all data files with no probs. However, when attempting to changes workstations over from NT 4.0 Domain to new SBS 2003 Domain they have problems talking to the Domain Controller even though I can ping everything just fine.

I have Gateway set to 10.0.0.1 for all workstations as well as DNS. Then on NIC 2 on the server I have it set to the routers IP as the Gateway and DNS.

I have the users setup in Active Directory and also setup the workstation names on the 2003 Server. I can use the browser and see the new server, click on network config and then CONNECT to NETWORK, I am then prompted for username and pass to join Domain and use our Admin rights login. Then it asks for which users to setup on that computer, I choose those then get the message it craps out and says contact Sys Admin error connecting to Domain??? any ideas?

Interesting that both NICs are on the same subnet. What prevents a user from changing their GW to the true GW address?

Also, there is a built in wizard you can use by going to from the workstations.

This might not solve the problem but you should remove the routers IP from the DNS tab on NIC2, you should configure this in the forwarders tab in DNS.

I found that I had some problems getting clients to find my new sbs2k3 AD after migration. Try these things:

Server:
Be sure DNS and WINS are both running on the svbs2k3 server. Using DHCP on the server to is a good idea.

Client:
Be sure that all clients have the sbs server ip for there DNS and WINS.

The most important thing my be to use teh fully quailifyed name that you set up the SBS server with. I had clients that could not find the domain untill I useed "mydomain.local" just using "mydomain" was not enough.

On winxp and win2k you can put the qualified name in controlpanel-> system -> computer name. However on NT4 and win9x you need to put in under the tcp/ip settings -> advanced -> DNS. In the upper right were it askes for a domain. This is the only place it would accept all the charecters.

Good luck
