I have been developing in foxpro for years. My applications involve large databases (100,000 to over 5,000,000 records). Data entry forms as well as printed reports are also a part of most my apps. Sophisticated queries are also required. Apps must be distributable. What development language would be a modern day replacement for foxpro. Visual Basic, Visual C++, Access, or what? I like foxpro but I am tired of worrying about when I'm going to seen my last upgrade.

Simply asked, what is the best data centric development language besides foxpro?

My 2 pence: Use Access. The only distribution requirement is that the user owns and installs a copy of Access/Office Professional. I usually find little resistance to this.
(As opposed to trying to get someone to fill their hard drive space with the .NET framework, for instance)
Access 97 and older may struggle with large datasets, but I think this is no longer true of Access 2000 onwards.
And the built-in report designer feels easier to use than Foxpro did the last time I used it.

Access has 97 has a 1Gb limit and 2k and beyond have a 2Gb limit in db size. You can however getaround this by using multiple db's.

Now for data centric languages there is Progress and a new product out (which I havent really checked out) called Alpha (5 i think (Alpha5)) which they say is as easy to use as Access.

Then if I the lightbulb ever goes on I will tell you the name of another one, but I can't think of its name. A little web searching though and you will probably run across it.

BTW Loomis, have you read FAQ222-2244?

Good Luck
