Hi,

I am a new SQL Server DBA and have been asked to move some small Sybase (11.5.1) databases to MS SQL Server 6.5.

Are there any known problems with this?

Also does anyone have any pro's and con's of moving a database from Sybase to SQL Server.

Thanks,

Gary Kuiper

Gary, I used to operate a main Sybase System 10 database with a mirror copy in SQL Server 6.5.

I can't remember SS6.5 having any specific upgrade wizard to move from sybase to SS so I think that you will have to transfer to table structures and data manually.

If you have build scripts for your tables then great, as the syntax should be virtually the same (well, SQL Server is Sybase ported to NT anyway!). If not, and your database schema is large then get ErWin and use it to generate the build scripts for you.

Data can be transferred using bcp, syntax should be nearly the same except that SYBCHAR will now be VARCHAR.

Any stored procedures and triggers should also be almost the same, but may need some small syntactical changes.

It is mainly a case of 'give it a go'. If it is just tables and data then it won't be too hard. SPs may be slightly harder.

<a href= home
