Hi,

I have a client running an old SBS2000 network and have finally convinced him to upgrade (both hardware & software) to SBS 2008.

We are currently using the Exchange facility within SBS 2000 and obviously want to continue using Exchange on the new SBS 2008 server.

I understand there is no direct upgrade path from SBS 2000 to SBS 2008 so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I move the old Exchange databases (edb & pub) to the new server. It would be great if I could just copy them over but I'm guessing it's never going to be that simple!

Any help, gratefully received.

Kind regards.

No it won't be that simple unfortunately. I have not done this migration directly. But I believe the path will be to build the new SBS 2008 box in a new domain. Use the active directory migration tool to move users. Then use exmerge to export mailboxes and import them into the new Exchange server. Someone please correct me if there is a better alternative.

you could also try a swing migration,
Personally, with a setup this old, i'd start from a fresh. Even a 50 user network can be done from scratch in a weekend with the right prep and another pair of hands.

Thanks Paul... appreciate your feedback...

Also worth remembering that exmerge wont work on mailboxes over 4gb IIRC
