Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone out there knew if it was possible to migrate users from AIX to Linux.

What we want to do is install OpenLDAP on a Linux machine and port all the users over to LDAP. I've googled around and could only find a few things, such as mrgpwd - but that only comes with NIS as far as I know.

Suggestions are very much welcomed - thank you in advance!

IMHO you can script this using the /etc/passwd for geting the users and their home dir. You will have first to move the home directory for the user and then create the user using that home directory.

Linux is somehow similar to unix in handling users (/etc/passwd) so i don't think you will face any problems.

(You can consider the above as not been said coz i don't have experience with Linux but i'm following the common sense!)

I hope others over here give an experienced answer!

Regards,
Khalid

Yes, I want to keep the passwords and such.

I also posted this question to the IBM forums, and they told me:

Code:
Try the nis2ldif and sec2ldif commands. This create LDAP input files from either NIS AIX users or file based AIX users. Specify that you want the RFC2307 schema option.

We're going to give this a shot. Since this isn't time critical, I will respond and update this post when we actually go forth with this, which should be in a couple days, perhaps longer.

Does anyone else have another idea as to how this can be done, perhaps a more simple route?
