I have a p570 which needs to be migrated to a new datacentre location. The current HMC is not being moved though, the p570 will migrated onto a new HMC in its new location.

My question is once the p570 is installed, and has connectivity to the new HMC, will i need to re-create the lpar definitions and partition profiles etc on the new HMC ?

Cheers in advance

Alex

No, when the p5 is connected to the other HMC, all LPAR definitions will be discovered from the p5 server's NVRAM to the HMC. The HMC doesn't actually store the lpar definitions, just visualizes them.

Only thing you'll need to know is the HMC password for the server's FSP.

I thought that might be the case, but wasnt sure.

Thanks for reminding me about the FSP hmc user password.

Cheers p5 !

P5wizard, Wouldn't the NVRAM be flushed once the P570 shuts down? In this case moving the P570 and starting it won't restore the LPARs definitions! Just wondering!?!

I've always thought that the NVRAM is something that will be there for the time the P570 is operating but it won't be there once it is rebooted! once starting then it should read the LPARs definitions from the HMC!

So if i was in dial8d shoes i would backup the current HMC and then once the P570 connected to the new HMC, all what needs to be done is restoring the old HMC backup over there!

Regards,
Khalid

NVRAM - Non-Volatile RAM. That's just IBM-ese for flash memory. And that's where the server's LPAR info is written to. HMC is a tool to visualize/modify the server's LPAR info and write it back to NVRAM.
