I have a used Lenovo T61 w 4gb ram and 100gb HD running w7 Ultimate 32bit but I do not have the installation disk or the OS installation key. I also have a new w7 Pro installation disk w key code and a 750 gb hd which I plan to use to install a 64bit OS replacement of the existing OS and HD. Once I install the new OS in 64bit, is there a way to migrate programs installed in the Program Files directories or do I have to reinstall everything?

Since you are moving from 32 bit to 64 bit, you will need to start with a clean install. The programs will not migrate over, so you'll need to reinstall everything.

You can, however, migrate settings and preferences using the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. Use it to backup everything on the current install, load 64-bit clean, install the programs you had before, then import using Windows Easy Transfer.

reinstall it's much easier :)

You could try the "Windows 7 transfer assistant" I did try it once and it suggested that I needed a drive with triple the space I was moving it off. I never did figure out why a 500GiB drive with W7 Ult needed 1.5TiB to move.

I should clarify that you shouldn't rely on the Windows Easy Transfer utility to capture everything. It will backup program settings, user preferences, and most if not all of your personal data stored in common locations like Documents. However, you should keep a complete backup of your old Windows install around just in case something's missing.

Also, the utility allows you to migrate from 32 to 64 bit, not the other way around. More info about all this here:
