Hi there,

I'm currently in the process of replacing an old Microsoft SBS 2008 server. I'll be using new hardware and re-installing SBS from scratch.

I want to copy the existing mailboxes to the new server. My thought process was to dismount the mailstore from the old server, copy to the new and then re-mount. However on the new server, at the request by the customer, the users have been changed from firstname@company.com to firstname.surname@company.com, I'm not sure if I'll be able to simply mount the store.

Though the system is SBS 2008, I believe this is an Exchange 2007 question.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

PS: Other thought was to manually export each mailbox to a PST and then import on the new server....though seems like a slower method.

You will not be able to mount the store, since the AD and the Exchange org will be different, since it's a fresh install.

PST export will be slower, but aside from using 3rd-party products, it's the cheapest option given the path that you've chosen to take.

Are you sure that you want to start from scratch instead of doing a migration? I handle a couple of SBS migrations a week and I find that the fresh installs always incur quite a bit of unanticipated work unless there are only 2-5 users.

Thanks Dave,

There are only a few users and I'm not entirely convinced the original server build was spot on...if you get my drift? Despite the extra effort I'd rather it be built right first time.

Thanks for your advice however, it's much appreciated!

PST is the only way to go if you are not migrating. Suggest that you take the X500 addresses with you to allow responses to old emails to work without NDR.

I think SBS has a 48 hours migration window so putting up both should allow you to do a migration.

SBS has 21-day migration window, actually, as long as you load the patch that allows it. Otherwise it's 7 days I think.

It's easy to get the X500 address you need from the first bounce-back after you import your mail from .pst files and then try replying to an email sent before the migration.

get-mailbox | fl name, emailaddresses (not 100% sure on the last name as not in front of a server at the moment) should get them all. You can then set-mailbox -emailaddresses to add them in again in bulk.

ish.
