I am installing a Microtek 9600XL scanner on my Dell XPS H266 PC using Windows 98SE. I am using an Adaptec 2920 SCSI card.

I have downloaded Scanwizard V3.09. I keep getting a error 204 message (scanning lamp and image sensor circuit failure). I have reconfigured the SCSI in the control panel (/u-) as suggested by Microtek. The scanner will make a pass through the calibration section and I see the item that I have scanned, but the program will not allow me to make the final scan..I keep getting the error 204 message.

I have contacted Microtek and was given "some" assistance - mostly to send the unit to them for repair ($$$ -not in warranty).

Two questions:
1)Does any one have a solution for this error message?

2). Can anyone identify the part that needs to be replaced, if indeed there is a scanning lamp or image sensor circuit failure?

Try letting the scanner warm up for a few minutes. Make sure you check the sleep settings. (if any in the software)

Otherwise you more than likely have a hardware/lightsource problem that will require repair.

Michael,
Thank you. It probably is a lightsource/hardware problem. Anyone have an idea on repairs?

Anne: I am having the same problem with my Dell GX240 and a ScanMaker 9600xl. Sometimes it works but there is never any rhyme or reason why. Did you ever find out how to fix this?

We're having the same problem. It happens ocassionally on black and white, but every time on color scans. Has anyone found a resolution to this?
