I have a user and randomly when she opens documents it comes up as read only and she cannot make changes to it. Sometimes if I close the document and reopen it then it will allow her to make changes. It happens randomly and to all documents. is there a setting in Word that can fix this?

If you close a document is sometimes lets her open it? DO you mean on her machine or your machine? Only one person can open a Word document and work on it at a time unless you are using a complex setup.

Could you clarify the problem please and let us know if these files are local or on a server and what OS and servicepacks are being used and what version of Word on your computer?

I am having what sounds to be the exact same problem, i am currently using a remnote server to host the word documents and am opening them through the word commandline switches eg. (winword.exe "ftp://<ipaddress>/folder/doc1.doc") this works fine about half the time but the rest of the time they open as readonly and i have to close and reopen them, then they work.

I have tried using a local server instead of ftp but i still get the same problem. I have also tried getting all they latest windows and office updates which also dident help.

at the moment i am using all windows 2000/XP workstations with office 2000, XP and 2003. and windows server 2003 for the ftp server, we login as anonymous to get access to the word documents. i have 30 - 40 users and this bug happens to all of them so i doubt it is a local workstation problem. its most likley to be something on the server or the version of word im using.

if anyone can think why it randomly opens as readonly please let me know.

Thanks
Dean
