That's right, CS. Another great idea from Microsoft in the Office 2000 suite. Excel has the option to turn this off and on, Word does NOT. The only "solution" I know is worse than living with it. If you want the template, I'll send it to you, but everyone I've sent it to so far hates it as much as I do.
How exactly are you opening your Word Documents?
Are you opening them from a VB program via Shell, ShellExecute or automation?
Are you opening them from another Office Application via VBA?
I just open it as normal double-click on the icon file. Dreamboat, I thought there is a way to set it like Excel.... OK, since it's working this way, why not you send me the template and see if I have any problem with your template or not. thank you. thanks & regards,
CS
I think this behavior is controlled by the Folder Options for Word Documents.
[1] Click out Folder Options via Start or in Explorer View.
[2] Navigator to Microsoft Word Document. Highlight by clicking on it. Then click the Edit button.
[3] In the Actions box, choose Open by clicking on it. Then push the Edit button below.
[4] See what settings are there in the input boxes. The following settings is what you may consider using.
Application used to perform action : "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe" /n
Use DDE : checked
DDE Message : [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1"]
Application : WinWord
DDE Application not Running :
-leave it blank here-
Topic : System
[5] Close by OK's.
If your settings there have different switches, you may consider testing the above see if the behavior of double-click on multiple .doc files under which is what you desire to have.
I have to weigh in on this one: change can be good and that is the case here. Now that I am used to moving between open documents via the task bar, I love it! It's much better than going to Window and choosing the other open document there. Particularly in Excel, where I am often working between two worksheets. It's not as though you have to close two windows when you exit out of Word, I don't see any drawbacks. Just my humble opinion, but give it a chance before you start making things harder on yourself by attempting difficult work-arounds.
It is an issue specific to word2000 _only_, not even for word97 or word2002. For some silly marketing(?) reason single-document-interface is preferred over multi-document-interface. It would be ok if they provide a choice to users---but, not so in word2000.
A workaround outthere is accredited to Romke Soldaat's dot template. Check out the article:
Tsuji, you mean, the option to open in every single word window or multiple documents in a single word app. is only for word97 and word2002? And it means, in word2000, there is no option for that windows selecting?
I am using Word2000(office2000, windows2000, SP2)
Thank you in advance. I thank every tips from you folks.
That's right, doldol. There is no option within Word 2000 to change this setting. Romke's template is the only workaround that I and many other "techies" know about, as you can see. I've been doing software support close to 4 years, so I was here when this "feature" first came out, and there's still no better workaround than Romke's template.
What his template does is force Word not to open a new window, but keeps them all under the Window menu. However, as I recall, the X in the upper, right-hand corner becomes unavailable in all but the last file closed, thus you must hit File-Close most of the time.
