Microsoft Word Forms Slow to Open or Corrupt

In the last week or so numerous of my users have experienced problems with Microsoft Word forms that have "fill-in" fields being very slow to open or going corrupt. These forms are not newly created or from a newly saved template, but had been saved to a local or network drive at some time in the past. This is occuring in Office 2003. I am wondering if it may have anything to do with a recent Microsoft update, as the issue has cropped up only in the last week or so.
