When opening a file on a shared directory on our LAN by using the Word file-open dialog box, the list of files does not always come up in alphabetical order. Sometimes it does. Regardless, when I click at the top of the Filename column, the files become randomly unsorted. I can sort on other column headings, just not the filename column. If that isn't strange enough, it's only this single folder. I've moved all the files to a newly created folder, but that new folder then behaves as the original did. The files are sorted alphabetically in Windows Explorer. It's only in Word that they aren't. I'm scratching my head here. Any ideas?

What operating system?

Anyway, try this; it's a solution published for Win98. In windows explorer pick a folder and sort the files in that folder in alphabetical order. Go to Tools, Folder Options, View tab and click Apply to all folders. Press CTRL key and while holding the key, click on close in the upper right corner. Reboot your computer.
